After the last month or so of gluttonous behavior, the rooted team is excited to start the year off right, with a round of juices and smoothies. We’ve been testing, sampling, and creating 12 ounces of nutritiously rich, vitamin-packed liquids to head into 2016 on balanced footing. So put down that glass of bubbly, forgive yourself for overdoing it the last month, and get your juice face on!
Aileen shopped at Fiesta Foods for some tart and hearty valley-inspired ingredients to stimulate the winter immune system: cucumber, mint, jalapeño and lime. Tangy, refreshing, and reviving. Though she longed to add a dash of tequila or gin, this tasty blend held it’s own.
Ever had aloe vera and cactus in your juice? We’ve discovered a little hidden juice gem in Yakima, WA, called Remedios Naturals & Jugos Nutricionales, owned by Jovito Valdovinos, off of South First and Maple Streets. The offerings are original, inspired, and a bit exotic—cactus, aloe vera, pineapple, celery, carrot, beets, orange, pineapple, grapefruit, to name a few.
Yakima health and fitness expert, Karin Kupp, sent us a great recipe to get your nutrients and fill up with the good stuff rather than eat a bowl of ice cream. She says it’s just as delicious and contains the protein that your muscles need. Chocolate in a smoothie? Now we’re talking!
Chocolate Mint Protein Shake
1 cup ice
1/2 frozen banana
1 tablespoon chopped dark chocolate
1 cup water
1 scoop high-quality chocolate protein powder
a few drops of organic peppermint flavoring (find next to vanilla extract at the store)
fresh mint leaves to garnish (optional)
Combine all of the ingredients in a blender. Mix until smooth.

sodium, 13g carbohydrate, 3g fiber, and 20g protein
We hope your New Year’s day and year is a health-filled one. Our year will be spent right here in the Yakima Valley plotting our course for upcoming rooted adventure.
Since we began this website, the rooted team of Aileen, Andreana and Shelley, has had the extreme pleasure of sharing with you, the wonderful places, food, farms, people, and experiences we’ve encountered in the Yakima Valley in the last several months.
We’ve met some amazing people, stumbled upon some surprising finds, and witnessed first hand, the beautiful and most genuine parts of our valley; real, delicious, colorful, muddy, and yes, authentic. We look forward to 2016, exploring more areas of the valley and uncovering its unknown, as of yet, hidden gems. Cheers!
